Matt Ryan receives scholarship to Cal-Poly
Pine Creek High School graduate, Matt Ryan, has joined former Colorado Springs Grizzlies backrow mate, Dallas Frye, as a 2012 Kevin Higgins Scholarship awardee. Ryan, a flanker who currently plays for #9 nationally-ranked Cal Poly's First Team, was on the Grizzlies Colorado State Championship team alongside fellow Higgins Scholar, Frye, who captained the side at 8-man and is currently displaying his wares at University of Northern Colorado in the three-quartersline.
Both players credit their coaches at Grizzlies for preparing them so well for post-high school rugby and college life, and recognize that the valuable fundamentals learned both onpitch and offpitch while with the Springs high school club still stand each of them well in their current positions.

Ryan Gilliland
2/26/13
Ryan Gilliland, Senior at Prairie View High School in Henderson, CO has been awarded a 4 year Rugby scholarship at American International College in Springfield, MA. After being elected to the select side team by former coach, Kim Brock, following the 2012 Spring Rugby season, Ryan was scouted and subsequently contacted by Coach Macy at AIC. During Thanksgiving break, Ryan and family visited AIC where Ryan toured the campus, visited the dorms, met fellow students, was introduced to staff and Coaches. Coach Macy then introduced Ryan to several of the Rugby team members and he had some time to get to know each of them while Coach Macy and the rest of the family discussed the school as an option. (Including Ryan’s 9 year old sister, Alex (2 season Rugby player), being introduced to the women’s Rugby team members and discussing her future at AIC as well!)
6 weeks after the visit – Ryan received an offer letter and initial scholarship of $44,000. This scholarship will be augmented depending on how Ryan does during the 2013 Spring Season. (And his GPA at the end of his Senior year as academics at AIC are considered as highly as athletic achievement.) Coach Macy stays in contact with Ryan and the entire family is very excited that Ryan has accepted the offer for AIC. Coach emphasized the importance of being in a great Rugby program leading up to college – so the whole family is thrilled that Ryan and former Thunderhawk Rugby team members are joining Northside Vikings this season. Ryan began his Rugby career 4 years ago playing for the Northside Dragons and working with Coach Brock and Coach Keelan – to whom the family is forever thankful. Ryan will begin AIC in the fall of 2013 majoring in Business and minoring in Psychology and taking the Ivy League Rugby teams by storm!
